sir,

I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of Your

Excellency's despatch No.44 of the 20th instant in which you

enquire what prospect there is of a change of the Provincial

Treasurer and of the authorities of the Canton Mint in the near

future.

I have been unable to ascertain that there is any

likelihood of a change in either of these departments of the

Provincial Administration in the near future.

The Office of the Provincial Treasurer of Canton is

a very lucrative one, and the present incumbent is popularly

supposed to be endeavouring to retain it as long as possible.

Nothing short of promotion to the Governorship of a Province is

likely to induce him to resign his post and hia prospects of

promotion are, I understand, meagre.

I have etc,

(sd) Harold Porter,

Acting Consul-General.

His Excellency

The Governor,

HONGKONG.
